Administrative Building Will Double as Analytical Lab for the Wichita Area
Wichita’s Northwest Water Facility will supply safe, clean drinking water for more than half a million residents in south central Kansas. The facility will be capable of treating 120 million gallons of water per day. One key facility to the operations of the water treatment plant is the Administrative Building (Admin Building) which will house both administrative offices and a fully-accredited NELAP laboratory.
At nearly 14,000 square feet, the Admin Building will provide office space for the plant management staff and 12-15 employees and support staff. The lab portion of the building will allow staff to perform analytical work for the water treatment plant as well as for additional City of Wichita facilities and other agencies in the south-central region.
Due to security measures associated with the operations of the facility, most of the building will not be publicly accessible; however, there will be a large conference room available for public meetings.
Earlier this year, the City released an RFP for an art consultant to assist with curating art to fill the public areas of the building as well as exterior areas of the plant along Zoo Boulevard. Submittals were due in March and the decision will be announced sometime this summer.
The building was designed by SJCF, PEC and Dudley-Williams & Associates, and is being constructed by Dondlinger Construction. Construction began on the building in March with the first concrete pours, and is anticipated to be complete March 2023. The lab will be up and running sometime in 2024 during the commissioning phase of the project.
